This course shows students that American literature explores how people overcome obstacles to shape their identities and achieve their dreams. Additionally, students learn how writer's word choices help them express their values and authenticate their role in various social, regional, and cultural groups. By having access to supplemental resources, my students will be allowed to participate in book clubs with titles that will allow them to make connections and participate in engaging discussions. Most importantly, my students will gain the confidence to answer questions such as: how can one determine the purpose of one's own life, does free will exist or is our fate predetermined, and to what extent are we responsible for our actions as individuals-and as a society.
