Due to COVID-19 healthy and safety protocols, students may not share materials this year, therefore all 22 students (with half learning in-person and half learning virtually) will need their own ration of math learning manipulatives and increments of money.
One of the foundations of mastering first grade math is understanding the concept of place value, and base ten blocks are a great way to give my students a visual so that they can fully grasp this most important element of math.
Base ten blocks help students compose and decompose numbers and understand them in both standard and expanded forms. Mastering this skill will allow my students to apply these fundamental concepts to real world mathematics.
The magnetic base ten blocks, in particular, provide a fun, efficient, and sterile method for students to practice these skills both as a class and independently as many times as he or she needs.
The magnetic boards will provide a necessary backdrop that is easy and efficient for students in class and at home. Additionally, we will use these boards with other math manipulatives as well as magnetic letters and words in composing words and phrases. They will serve multiple uses in my class.
Finally, the money sets will help my students be able to successfully identify both coins and bills and know each one's value, while we build upon their ability to skip-count by each of these increments.
