These crochet supplies will be necessary to teach my classes of 30-32 students how to crochet during art class. Right now, we have some yarn and hooks in the classroom, but not enough for the entire class to participate. Students will learn to crochet using instructional videos, teacher and student-led demonstrations, and small group instruction.
Once students learn the basics, they will collaborate to design and create crochet installations or larger-scale projects. The goal of this project is for students to try a new medium and to build community in the classroom through collaboration.
Another added benefit to students learning how to crochet is that it could be a healthy coping mechanism for stress and anxiety. Students will also learn the history of crochet and the fiber arts movement of the 60s and 70s. Crochet is a medium that is often not taught in the high school art classroom, but it is rich in history and cultural connections.
