Research shows that students need to see themselves in the books they read. Without characters that look like them, they feel undervalued and that their story does not matter. Scholars who feel like their story is valid connect more to the school and community experience.
We all want to be heard and valued. With this set of texts, my students who normally say, "I can't connect to this character because I am not a white girl", can finally find themselves as the heroine/hero in a text. If students see shared experiences in their texts, reading becomes more culturally relevant to their lives.
