Students will each receive their own copy of the novel, Island of the Blue Dolphins. We will study this novel together as a class. students will be able to highlight and annotate their copies to enhance reading comprehension (while practicing valuable annotation skills). Students will be able to keep these books in their own home libraries, eliminating the stress of returning them to the school.
We will use this novel to discuss California native peoples, specifically, the Tongva and Nicoleño tribes (the protagonist of this novel is Nicoleño) native to the region around Los Angeles, where students live.
We will discuss traits that make Korana a strong female protagonist: perseverance, dedication, ingenuity, loyalty and more.
Our novel study unit will go hand in hand with 4th Grade Social Studies standards, art projects, and Social Emotional Learning.
