We have a great little library at our school and our students love to pick out books to read on the unit. We try to go together at least once a week so that I can support them in finding new books to devour. Reading is one of the most positive and popular things to do when they are in their rooms. Some of them sneak books to class because they can't put them down! They can also do projects with these texts to catch up on their credits and work toward graduating on time! Many students forget English Language Arts is the class you need all 4 years of high school, so we focus on getting students caught up as much as possible.
Unfortunately, certain groups or types of narratives are over represented in our library, and we have a clear need for more narratives from our Native American and Somali communities. We want to build these sections of our library so students can see themselves represented. It is also important for all students to read texts that expose them to different cultures, ideas, and philosophies. Reading the right book at the right time can change a life, and there is no time to waste for our students.
