Rote memorization or recall has lost its value in past years and rightly so. Today's emphasis is on higher order thinking skills. However, there are certain fundamental skills/facts that should be memorized in order to develop fluency; the ability to recall quickly and easily. Fluency in math facts and sight words is a catalyst for moving them to proficiency.
Rather than spending time to figure out basic facts and skills they can spend more time on higher order problem solving.
Memorizing can be a daunting task indeed. It becomes boring and children lose interest so that's why we would love to have a set of Chromebooks. My students could become proficient in basic skills without "shedding a tear?" Every day I will have a center set up for children to rotate throughout the day. Programs will track their progress and provide immediate feedback. Adding a little competitiveness against themselves or peers along the way will motivate them that much more!
