My students often struggle with sensory overload. We are in our room over 75% of the day. Appropriately modified lighting will give my students a better opportunity to be successful in reaching their goals. When my students are trying to learn in bright lighting, they have trouble focusing on the task at hand. The bright lighting leads some students to shield their eyes while we are working or while we are entering and exiting our classroom. Studies have shown that florescent lighting can actually cause pain and/or headaches for some people with light sensitivity issues. While none of my students have expressed this concern, I always try to remember that on any given day students may not have the tools or skill mastery to effectively communicate their needs; thus, I often have to observe closely to determine what each individual student needs.
