The book Poppy is about a female mouse who loses her best friend to the evil owl Mr. Ocax. Poppy must decide to follow tradition or seek the truth that will ultimately change her life forever. This book with its strong female protagonist is a six - week novel study for my class of 3rd graders. In this class of predominantly girls, we will "soar" into story elements, comprehension, vocabulary, writing, and awesome group discussions centered around themes like heroism, power of tradition, and change. Next, the students will exchange their literary cap for a science lab coat, as they learn about barn owls and dissect owl pellets. With this class set of books, my students will foster a love for reading, science, and discovery.
