With so many distractions (the hallway, desk storage area, pencils, pens, drawing) in the classroom, it's best to bring the whole class together in a central place, away from the mentioned distractions. This often means students come together and sit on the floor by the board.
Who wants to sit on the cold floor? Certainly not me! So why do I expect my students to do this? Having a carpet would be a great central location for these lessons and meetings to occur. My students would be much more engaged and comfortable while sitting on a carpet. I know that this would make one less distraction/barrier for them to focus on during the instructional time.
