The materials I chose give students the opportunity to experience reading in a variety of ways while at the same time being an enjoyable experience. Many of my students dislike reading because it is a struggle, just like I don't prefer engaging in activities that I don't feel I'm successful in. The materials are fun and engaging and students learn to be more comfortable with words. They can either access the materials on their own or in pairs and groups. The materials include sentence building activities, matching phrases to pictures and basic reading skills. I also chose class sets of chapter books which will give us the opportunity to choral read and discuss the the books together.
As a special education teacher I consider it part of my job to teach my students that reading can be fun!! Reading is not just another task expected of them, it gives them access to their world and to the world of imagination. These materials support my philosophy that learning should be both fun and engaging.
