In sixth grade, we are learning about fractions, decimals, geometry, and rations. Fraction manipulative are important to create a broader understanding of portion representation.
Being in this low income community, we have children with IEPs and students who take English as a second language. Visual representations are crucial for their success and understanding in rigorous concepts. For example, when we introduce multiplying negatives and positives, I will use counters that are color coded. I believe that all students deserve the right to experience the luxury of being exposed to real world math problems. Whiteboards are needed to develop teamwork and create leaders that are able to teach others.
