Since my students come from many different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds, having them build communities with LEGOs will help them connect with each other and feel that they are all a part of something. They will be excited use their creativity and imagination to learn about communities.
Hands-on building is an activity that connects all students regardless of their backgrounds. It is something that they can all access no matter what language they speak or their individual learning needs. During our social studies time the students will be able to plan different ways that people live and work in our cities and towns. Instead of simply showing students pictures of communities, they will be able to actually create them with LEGOs!
