I teach English Language Arts and humanities in the Appalachian area of eastern Kentucky. My students have the capacity to excel, but their opportunities are limited by poverty in their homes and funding at school. Many come from single-parent households or live with elderly grandparents, and school may be the brightest light in their lives.
Despite their poverty, my students are among the most intelligent, talented and creative students anywhere, and although they do not have the resources to develop their abilities to the fullest, each day I watch them consistently do more with less, and I know their potential.
It is often difficult for them to compete with peers from wealthier school districts with well-funded programs, ample resources, and diverse opportunities. The disadvantages of poverty are more than economic, but my students and I do our best to overcome these challenges. Donors Choose projects help!
