Many students are unable to use the school library because they have misplaced their books over the summer. Students often ask me if I have any books they can read in their general education class, read with me, and take home.
One student explained that he only has one book at home and he's read it many times. He explained that he really wants new books to read, books to call his own.
As a previous middle and high school teacher, I do not have many books at the elementary level. Ensuring that each student has a book, regardless of their overdraft fees, is important to me and even more important to them. Many of them do not have books at home but would like to. Many of my students also help their younger siblings with homework and serve as the older brother/sister role model. It is my hope to put a book in each of my student's hands, ensure they keep their love and interest in reading and provide a reading library in the classroom that can also be used to help improve their reading/literacy abilities.
