Gathering for Morning Meetings, as well as Literacy and Math whole or small group lessons and activities, is much more inviting on a colorful and cozy classroom carpet. It allows my students an alternative seating option, within defined parameters, that helps them to not only focus on my teaching and their learning, but also gives them opportunities for peer interaction and discussion. The particular classroom carpet I chose reminds students of the positive character traits we want to continue to develop in each and every one of us, each and every day.
With the addition of a mobile easel, I can model skills and create anchor charts for group discussion and easy visual reference. Students can easily turn and talk with a partner when asked to share their ideas, and then refocus their attention on the visual flipchart or the teacher. Using a flipchart within a lesson can give students an opportunity to add their own comments to the chart, or to be a "student-teacher" when invited to demonstrate a particular math strategy that worked for them. Later, anchor charts can be posted around the room to remind students of key concepts as they practice their skills independently.
Please help me make my classroom more inviting and more conducive to learning by donating to my project...my students and I will be forever grateful!!!
