Children build upon knowledge when they have opportunities to take ownership of their own learning. Each child will choose personalized self-guided activities from a Rise and Shine Binder each morning. The activities are designed to immerse first graders into hands-on progressive math problem-solving challenges and word work from the moment they enter the classroom. Included in each binder are activity pages in sheet protectors, manipulative pockets, and tools which challenge place value, operations, flexible groupings of numbers, measurement, data, geometry, vocabulary, grammar, and phonemic awareness; all which are aligned to Common Core standards. The Rise and Shine Binders will increase proficiency through daily practice and independent problem-solving challenges. Manipulatives such as Cuisenaire Rods, counters, place value blocks will be provided to allow students the tools to show their mathematical thinking. The binders will be reusable and have the capacity to hold progressive pages that will build in mathematical and literature-based complexity to push students towards the application of higher-order thinking skills and rigor. In a nutshell, these morning binders will inspire students to "rise" above simple review, and "shine" as they discover mastery through exploration, and independent practice.
