Stretch your legs and arms and take a seat! Or stand! Who am I to tell you how you should be reading this? For the upcoming 2019-2020 school year, I am transforming my new art classroom space into a creative space that includes flexible seating (or standing) arrangements.
Through visual art, it gives my students a chance to truly express themselves and while they are expressing themselves, they should be in a flexible and comfortable environment - a continued safe space. My goal is to transform the standard classroom that we are so used to and transform it into a space that allows them to create without the distractions of discomfort, anxiety, angst, etc. My other goal is to also expose them to what an art studio can look like. That is where the easels and stools come into play.
In addition to the different seating and standing options, I also incorporated other tools to enhance comfort such as the foot pedals, chair bands, balancing board, and seat cushion. I truly believe that creating this atmosphere will not only help with better comfort and movement, but it will also help them to learn how to make choices, continue to share, and build different friendships all while getting the necessary sensory input as well.
In my art class, I give students the opportunity to explore different materials, topics, and cultures. They also participate in many hands on projects for our markets as well as projects for the community. With your help, we can continue to create all of these fantastic projects with the transformation of a more flexible classroom setting. Thank you all so much for your contribution!!
