Having structured play time in my classroom is hugely important to me. Kids must be taught how to play, share and problem solve. Creating space for this in the classroom allows us to build a community of empathetic and group-minded little people.
Being part of the biggest district in Oregon almost guarantees budget allocation complications. Portland Public Schools has lost a huge portion of funding for custodial staff. We occupy these rooms and buildings 9 hours a day and being able to keep them clean has a huge influence on our ability to function. Classroom jobs and ample tools/supplies allow students to take ownership of the space they spend so much time in.
