Many of my students enter school lacking fine motor skills. We use fine motor skills for cutting, writing, tying shoes, zipping jackets, and even opening food packages. I have students entering my classroom who have never needed to use these skills at home. These are things we do every day at school, so it can be a struggle. These materials will be used for both small groups and during free choice center time. One segment of our day is small group time. While my teaching assistant and I are working on academic skills, several groups practice skills on their own. Fine motor strength activities are fun for my students as well as important practice. These materials will allow them to use that time productively to master necessary skills. During free choice centers, students spend much of their day choosing where to play and what they want to do there. These materials also allow me to bring interest to fine motor skills and my alphabet/literacy center. Interest in letters and increased fine motor skills leads to much more confidence in writing.
