When you walk into my bilingual classroom, my students' love for reading is clear - they flip through English books, fascinated by the images and are excited for read alouds and shared reading. However, our district has not adopted a new Spanish reading curriculum in a decade. This means that our textbooks are out of date, in poor condition, and do not do the work to engage our growing readers. Instead, bilingual teachers are given books and other materials in English. This limits the way that students can engage with books. While they are fascinated by the illustrations, they are not yet ready to read text in English and fully comprehend what they have read. To ensure that students' reading skills continue to grow they need a print-rich environment with texts in their native language.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level. These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind. The diverse settings, characters, and plots connect to students lives in various ways. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.
Please help support our bilingual program by stocking our classroom library with books in Spanish. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading.
