I work with entry level students with Autism. They have daily challenges with trying to adapt to their ever-changing sensory systems. They are extra sensitive to things such as light and sound, which is why the program they attend is dedicated to decreasing this obstacle for them in a highly structured environment.
They are truly amazing students with wavelengths of talent, but they need assistance accessing it due to sensory over or understimulation. It is a battle everyday to discover their needs and how their environment can be adapted to suit each of them individually. They are great children with personalities and a sense of humor to boot. They truly light up my day, and have the ability to put a smile on any person who may encounter them.
Research on Autism shows that sensory regulation is the first step in positive programming for students with Autism. If their sensory systems are in sync, they are much more likely to learn.
