In many classroom libraries out there, the main character in those books are white, gender specific, and heterosexual. For those who don't fit into those categories, have a hard time relating to the characters in the book because they are not like them. When a student goes to pick out a book, they are looking for a character who is relatable to them and will likely be easy to understand. If a student is constantly being rejected of this, it can cause a student to not want to read because they are never finding that relatable aspect to it.
I want my students to feel a sense of belonging when they pick up a book in my classroom. Every day my students will be reading a novel they decided on at the beginning of class. This helps increase their reading skills and their comprehension skills over time.
When a student finally finds a book that interests them and relates to them, they become life-long readers. That is my end goal as an English teacher.
