Our goal is to provide safe environments for optimal learning in our classrooms. In our school district many children have experienced a variety of traumas that have directly affected their brain chemistry. We want our children to learn and use coping strategies that keep their brains in their executive state where they can problem solve and make good choices.
Children that feel safe and loved will stay in the executive part of their brain, but students that get triggered need a place to help calm them down or disengage from stress. Each classroom is creating safe places or corners. These safe places have items such as stress relief balls, fidgets, or calming bottles made with glitter. I am the school counselor and I will use the materials to make safe baskets that teachers can put into their safe places. We will also have places throughout the building that is made for this as well. We have been trained on how to teach kids to use these safe places and we are looking forward to having these in every classroom.
