Good teaching is all about modeling the skills that your students need to succeed. When teaching writing, it's important to show students what each step of the writing process looks like, so they can practice, and eventually internalize those skills. In addition, we all learn more when we can work together on those skills. We need ample board space to give students space to work together on their writing. Whether we're brainstorming, planning, editing, revising, modeling, or celebrating good writing, we need board-space to do this together. We begin by analyzing examples of really good writing, then students work together to emulate the organization, style, and tone of the "expert" models. Later, students work on their own writing, but this process works better for everyone if we work together. Ample board space gives us the platform for success through collaboration!
