My students must be engaged and comfortable while they are learning. This can definitely be a challenge at time with a lard class of 33 students. Some students used to have a hard time keeping up because their desk is closer to the back of the room, and that can allow a child to easily get distracted. However, last year we began to have the whole group move closer to the front so everyone can stay engaged.
The challenge that we have right now is that since I teach middle school, I want the students to feel comfortable when they move up to the front of the room, and not have to bring all of their chairs. Many of the students are tall, so it is very hard for them to sit on the floor comfortably or for all of the students to fit on one rug. Therefore, flexible seating will allow my students to all have an opportunity to be close together as a group, but allow students choices on where they can sit and what they can sit on.
