Soft skills are an essential component in securing and maintaining employment. In SOAR, we seek every opportunity to build on these skills. It is essential that students learn to work well with one another. Respectful and purposeful communication is important in all areas in life. Therefore, activities in this class are structured to give students the chance to practice multi-faceted communication. Our students have had challenges fitting in the box that is traditional education. In SOAR we seek to teach in ways that build their self-confidence and, thus, their problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork skills. In SOAR we place significant emphasis on preparing students for life after high school, the world of work taking center stage. Employers are seeking young people with good interpersonal skills. Providing numerous opportunities for students to grow in this regard, through working together cooperatively, is critically important. For this project, I have also chosen items that build skills in science, technology, engineering, and art, as well as, social-emotional learning, addressing many 21st century skills in addition to developing interpersonal skills.

About my class
