Building the Eco-Columns will provide a long term data collection opportunity for my students. Eco-columns are designed to model an ecosystem on a small scale. Eco-columns typically have 3 chambers: the terrestrial chamber, the decomposition chamber, and the aquatic chamber.
The students will build and collect data from their own eco-columns and therefore be able to take ownership of their learning. There are several topics in the AP Environmental science curriculum that we can focus on with this project. Students will learn how to graph and analyze the data collected. They will be able to study the Nitrogen cycle, Nutrients in the soil, the food web, water treatment, and water quality. They will be able to use the stereoscopes to see the detritovores and the decomposers in the leaf litter.
