We are all working hard to prepare our future generation for the challenge of getting to college. My students are in their junior year of high school and are well on their way to developing strong study skills as well as learning to be self-advocates. I'm so proud of what they have already accomplished! This is a typically stressful year and as their AVID teacher, I watch them experience moments of defeat, often getting discouraged in their journey. There is nothing quite like visiting a bustling college campus to motivate them and solidify the idea of going to college.
Many of my students have never stepped foot onto a college campus! Unlike many of their high school peers, they don't take college sightseeing trips over summer with their families. College is not discussed around the dinner table. Many of them will be the first in their family to go beyond high school. It is my hope to show them a variety of schools where they will experience a sense of belonging and get excited about what they can accomplish.
We plan to visit Cal Poly Pomona as we head out of Southern California. We will then stop at UC Santa Barbara, move north to Cal State San Jose, head east to UC Merced, and then finally visit Cal State Dominguez Hills as we return home.
Transportation and lodging are often cost-prohibitive for trips like these, making it impossible to travel as an AVID group. With your generous donation, my students will take a trip of a lifetime that will ultimately influence where they plan to further their education. This is something they will remember forever!
