The materials and supplies that I have requested for my students will help them to strive towards increasing their independent daily living skills. The program I am piloting has a classroom with a full kitchen in it. These items are essential in building an atmosphere and providing the students with the supplies necessary to become excellent chefs while incorporating team work and having fun.
Experiencing something is a great way to learn, retain, and practice skills. Through cooking lessons and holding a mock restaurant for our onsite classes the students will be afforded several learning experiences. First as a class we will select what we will be cooking and work together to create a list of ingredients and go shopping for items needed. This shopping experience will allow students to develop skills in problem solving, comparing prices, reading, teamwork, safety in the community just to name a few. We will then follow a recipe and use the materials I requested to, as a class, create a delicious meal for our classmates.
Cooking lessons build on several important skills. The students must read the recipe whether in picture or written form, locate items needed, measure ingredients, follow step by step directions, and work together. In addition to working together to bake they will also take responsibility for the clean up of all materials, This will give them experiences in washing dishes, cleaning a kitchen, disposing of items that are not longer usable and determining where the remainder of ingredients should be stored. These are all skills that will be needed for them to lead the most independent life possible. After everything is cooked and cleaned we will then invite another classroom to our restaurant service. All of these skills are essential towards becoming more independent adults.
