Every year I have between 10-12 students in my class. We work a lot on positive thinking and being mindful of how we can succeed. We have talked about flexible seating, and what kind of seating would help them learn and stay focused. Currently, I have bean bags, two stand up tables with the option of stools, and a yoga ball. They love these options, but they are limited. I also allow students to sit on the floor around the room whenever we have independent work time. I've noticed that with freedom of choice in seating their focus greatly increases.
In researching flexible seating, I found that it promotes student creativity and collaboration. Also, students feel empowered by having a choice of where they can sit and the availability to change their location, as needed. Flexible seating encourages students to find their best spot to stay calm, focused, and productive. If students are comfortable it encourages a more proactive student rather than a distracted student.
