During my Math Empowerment class students work at three different stations daily. The stations are working with the teacher, playing a game on the computer or a classroom helper and independent practice or homework station. At the independent practice station I would love to give students the option to listen to music of their choice but letting them use their phone is too distracting.
When my students are listening to music some are more focused on the work and less distracted by their environment; when they choose the music they are even more motivated. The use of small personal radios will allow students choose without the distractions of a smart phone. Getting this individual practice in class will help them learn to work on the math themselves and persevere instead of quitting.
