Making connections between English and Spanish helps my students enrich their native language skills and build their understanding of their second language. When I point out common roots between words in English and Spanish (or, even better, when they discover connections themselves), my students' eyes light up.
For example, the English word "apprentice" has a connection to the Spanish word "aprender" (to learn.) What started out as an odd word quickly becomes part of their vocabulary because of the language that they already know. New words take on a richer significance and a deeper meaning because of a student's knowledge of two languages.
Word-to-word dictionaries help support this cross-language learning that happens every day in our dual language classrooms.
