My students are in sixth grade and will be learning about ancient Greek history. They are fascinated by ancient Greek mythology and I want to connect that into our English classes, having them write their own stories connecting Greek myths to modern day life. By reading the Percy Jackson series, they will be able to see how ancient Greece and other ancient societies can still be applicable today and how they can fit into a modern society with modern technology and needs. They will think about how we have changed as a culture and the ways we have stayed the same. We currently lack a full class set of books, so these books will allow us to all read the same book and discuss it as a class.
My students also love arts and crafts and making physical models of what we are learning about, such as a physical model of Mesopotamian irrigation. We will use the popsicle sticks and clay to design temples for the Greek gods which will be on display in the classroom.
