Independent Reading time is sacred in my fifth grade classroom. Students may choose WHATEVER they would like to read as long as they are reading. This freedom opens doors for one-to-one conferences, small group book clubs and class book talks. Our class library is an easily accessible way to expose students to diverse thinking as they nurture their already existing love of reading.
Adding this variety of titles to our class bookshelf will ignite thinking and conversation in our classroom.
Many of these books will teach empathy. Others will introduce new concepts. Some will alter perceptions and perspectives. My hope is that these titles will open my students' eyes to the way they view themselves, others, and their world. Your generous donation will also help my students expand their reading world and open doors to new lands, ideas and cultures. These books, and the opportunity to collaborate about the important issues with peers, will inspire my students to read more, know more, and become more critical, compassionate thinkers.
