Picture what life would be like if everyone thought the same way and expressed the same ideas. Of course, this would make the world a mundane place to live in! So why do we expect students, who are so varied in their learning styles, to work in environments that do not suit them? Allowing students to learn in an environment that is adapted to suit their unique needs gives students a sense of freedom, choice, and accountability. Flexible seating allows for students to make conscious choices about their learning environments; creating opportunities for self-regulation, independence, and variations for their diverse learning needs. It is my sincerest hope to nurture students and their learning styles at a young age, and flexible seating is a key way to do so! Flexible seating in my classroom will allow for my students to begin their educational journey with a sense of self-directed inquiry and explorations into the wonderful world of learning. The Marketing Education Review states, "The findings, based on data gathered from students and faculty, indicate that the renovated classroom increases student engagement, collaboration, flexibility, and learning" Stern Neill & Rebecca Etheridge, 2015. This is one of several reputable research-based inquiries that prove the pedagogical benefits of flexible seating.Through this unique flexible seating environment, my students will continue to advocate for themselves and their needs throughout their educational careers.
