In 6th grade general music, we have a unit on guitars. Each student receives a guitar to use during class. We learn the very basics of strumming, reading chords and tablature, and playing songs that they hear on the radio every day.
Learning a new instrument can be exciting, but also frustrating at the same time! To keep away the frustration, I have an incentive program, where students complete specific levels of playing, and they receive a colored pick to put on a necklace. They can wear it around the school with pride to show their accomplishments. The purple pick is the highest achieving pick a student can receive.
