Children in my school and in the school's neighborhood need extra assistance in sitting and being engaged in a story. Most successful students come to school with over 1,000 hours of 'lap time' with an adult and have learned how to sit still for an entire story or two. It is clear a lot of my students come to school with that deficit, and they need an extra visual and incentive to become engaged in the storytelling process.
When learners have a visual tied with the auditory book, they will better remember the story, and then be able to focus on story elements, like character, setting, and sequence of events. Students will also be able to retell or summarize the story, maybe while using the kits in small groups, or maybe even individually. We will also be writing and drawing about the books in the storytelling kits, so students will be assessed and I'll be able to see growth in their literacy skills.
