Each year I use critical thinking games to teach strategy. Using games creates extremely high student engagement. Throughout this unit some of the games are: Chess, Sudoku, Pente, Mancala, Gomuko, and Mastermind. For each game students learn history, vocabulary, inventors, and
the strategies needed to play the game.
Students use a growth mindset when presented with new challenges. They must equip themselves with alternate methods to implement the strategies learned to accept defeat on their journey to success. "Failure is the key to success, each mistake teaches us something." Morihei Ueshiba.
Students engage with the game, explore multiple strategies, explain their reasoning. Students learn the importance of thinking one step ahead and how chance comes into play.
Perseverance, tenacity, and integrity are life skills taught throughout this unit. These skills will create lifelong learners, even as adults we still crave the thrill of strategy and the feeling of accomplishment.
