We are requesting boks. Our titles include The Things They Carried, The Kite Runner, TheHunger Games and more. I'll never forget falling in love with reading when I was in elementary school. The books I read took me to a new world, one in which I could escape from reality and be someone else, at the same time learning more and more about who I really am.
I believe in the moving power of a good book. And I believe everyone can be changed by reading like I am every day. The stories told in great books teach our kids about themselves, about others, and about the world around them. They learn empathy, and they learn how to be proud of who they are. They learn to be better listeners, friends, community members, and more. This is why I spend so much time investing in my students' reading lives.
Not every student who steps into my classroom does so as a reader, but every one of them knows that I am obsessed with turning them into one. Through reading conferences, book talks, book trailers, and more, I work hard to become invested in the reading lives of my students, and they're very aware of this truth. Knowing this, and knowing that I believe in them and care about them as readers, inspires them to give it a shot for themselves. With the right books, their lives can be changed.
