Whether, it's calculating the distance between stars in light years or calculating the distance between atoms in nano meters, our students will benefit from having access to scientific calculators. When the concepts being learned in my math class are applied to real life situations, the calculations can get a little messy. We are creating opportunities for students to use real data in their assignments and these numbers are not always whole numbers and easy numbers to calculate.
Scientific calculators will help bridge the conceptual and procedural understanding of the tasks and the calculations needed for getting the problem correct. Students are learning how to gather numerical data and analyze the data by calculating statistical measurements such as mean and standard deviation, they are creating mathematical models to help analyze trends or patterns in the model, and they are completing performance tasks that cognitively challenging students.
In addition, scientific calculators will help students that struggle with basic arithmetic skills access higher mathematical concepts. The scientific calculators will help bridge the status gap that exists in the classroom. Scientific calculators are a tool in the classroom that will both challenge the high performing students and the elevate the struggling student to an even playing field.
