Mind-Expanding Moments (Purposeful Play)
My project is intended to allow students to influence each other socially and creatively in a purposeful way. The items requested will allow students to collaborate, create, think, reflect, and create again. The activities are Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) based. The materials will be paired task cards which are designed to inspire and challenge students.
The materials requested will be used to teach our core curriculum as well. The lego sets will support our Community and Simple Machine Units. The guiding question for the Community unit I teach is "What Makes a Community a Community?" We begin with our classroom community. The Community starter lego set will directly encourage collaboration in the building as well as address map standards as once complete student will map the results using a "bird's eye view."
The Simple and Powered Machine set will directly enhance our study of force and motion and how that relates to Simple Machines. This and the rest of the materials will be of great use as we create Rube Goldberg Machines for our final product to this unit.
Lastly, I can foresee using the kits to enhance virtual learning if need be because they can be distributed for students to have common projects with varied materials.
