This novel will provide my AP literature students with the opportunity to study contemporary novels by women of color. This novel is an important addition to the AP curriculum because it encourages and produces critical discussions of gender, race, class, visibility, inclusion, and societal structures.
It is important to expose our students to these novels in addition to the traditional canonical works, and our students should be given the opportunity to read and analyze diverse works and authors. Students will use these novels to analyze the author's purpose, identify figurative language, and write explanatory texts in preparation for their AP literature exam.
