Flexible seating allows students choice in their learning and advocate for their own needs during the day. During independent work times they choose a location and comfortable tool in the classroom that allows them to be successful. Currently my students are choosing to work at various tables, laying on the carpet, or sitting or laying on the floor with a clip board. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivation. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice during learning. Varying the choices will allow students a well rounded ability to express their needs and explore options that will work for them going forward.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given choice during independent work times. These tools will help my students make more effective learning choices and be safe while doing so. The wobble stools will allow students movement while working at either a desk or at a table. Some may even use these during a group lesson on the rug when the lessons run longer. These will be extremely useful for my students that can not sit still and listen. The cushions will allow for creativity with their comfortable working spots as they are lightweight and can easily move the cushions as needed. I have a handful of students that benefit from quiet work environments and have a difficulty with sound stimulus. Noise cancelling headphones has helped my students ability to function successfully with their peers.
I have seen how choice can positively affect second grade attitude and motivation and hope that the additional options will help my students grow and accept various learning styles.
