Blood on the River is a wonderful tool to teach, not only as a great example of Historical Fiction but as a way to highlight the social studies standards that we need to teach in 5th grade.
This year, I tried to teach this novel in digital form; however, nothing replaces a handheld book! Digitally, my students were not able to easily navigate the text, refer to content, nor annotate with ease.
Blood on the River is written through the eyes of a 10-year-old boy. My students are in this age range and can relate to the many hardships and setbacks this main character experiences. I am hopeful that, if given a handheld novel, my students will relish this book as much as I do!
