Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder often find if difficult to obtain and maintain a job after finishing high school. A proclamation on the United Nations website estimates more than 80% of individuals on the autism spectrum are unemployed. Many factors contribute to this number including a shortage of vocational training, inadequate support with job training, and pervasive discrimination.
The goal for my Ðǿմ«Ã½ project is to offer pre-vocational training skills in my classroom through the materials I am requesting. The kits will allow my students to gain important job skills such as following directions, working independently, and managing time. In addition to these skills, they also learn the very important concept of self-confidence.
When my students are able to successfully complete a job or task, their faces light up! To hear them say, "I can do hard things" or "I can do it myself" it makes all of the hard work of learning worth it.
