My second graders are a little bit of thoughtful, crazy, caring, outspoken, needy, understanding, polite, and on fire for learning. They love making connections with picture books that we read every day as a class. We discuss what the author is trying to teach us, and they are exposed to whole books every single day. These are also used as mentor texts for my reading instruction. I am in need of inclusive picture books that touch on multiple issues and topics across all socioeconomics, ethnicities, and cultures.
We emphasize how awesome it is to be different and that fair isn't always equal. Our class is unique, and my students come from a wide range of socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. These books are not only academically useful, but they also expose my students to the world around them.
