Last year, I developed a pilot program for a third grade class. They had six weeks to complete their own creative project using a specific set of criteria and engaging materials. Their projects were designed to reflect individual interests and growth as artists. Their innovation, creativity and problem solving was evident in their finished work. In the end, I had 100% participation from each student.
Allowing choice in the art room offers students a chance to connect to their work in ways that teacher led projects may not.
They were proud of what they created, evidenced by the reflections found in their artist statements. I'm opening this opportunity to more students this year due to the success of the pilot program.
