This class is comprised of seniors preparing to enter their last semester of public high school. As students of our "High Poverty" school, all are on track to graduate, although some have had to attend credit retrieval classes to get there. Most students are from single (or absent) parent households and qualify for free and reduced lunch. The idea of independence is something they feel they have, however, their ultimate view of the future, til now, has been one of survival. The concepts of having a job, paying bills, paying taxes, and budgeting are all things they have heard about and done to a minimal extent. Most have held entry-level jobs for a few days a week and some contribute to the household finances but are unclear about what it means to maintain a positive credit score, utilize budgeting as a means for avoiding debt, and build up a savings account to fall back on if needed. Many are starting to think about moving out on their own and are overwhelmed by the process.
