Many of my English 12 students have not read an entire book since they have started high school. They experts at the art of “fake reading”. When I develop my English 12 curriculum, I like to find texts that are high interest and make them want to read. Just Mercy is engaging and covers a topic that interests them—justice.
When my students leave my classroom at the end of the year, I want them to feel confident reading both fiction and non-fiction texts. Many of my students do not feel confident in their non-fiction reading skills. This book will give them the opportunity to apply non-fiction reading skills. Most of the reading many of them will do in their day to day life is non-fiction reading. By helping them develop these skills, they will be more educated and informed citizens.
